Common Questions / requests

The purpose of this page is to publish some of the most common questions that I get. I just started this, so I'll add to it as I go forward from here at the end of 2017.

Q: Hi Lance may I have a quote for a canvas(or stretcher) 34"x 79.5"

A: Hi there,

Here is the quote you requested :) (ATTACHED PDF)

There are 4 primary options for a canvas going from basic to highly refined.

Generally the fabric is #12 double primed cotton duck, although there are more options like raw canvas or Artfix French primed Belgian linen.

1st:

Studio strainer bars. These are basic strainer bars that are glued and nailed together permanently (unless you omit the glue during assembly). They are not as detailed with the cosmetic refinement we do to our higher end products. These are still far beyond what the art stores carry, can be made to any dimension within 1/16", and they are pre-drilled to guarantee that they will go together square.

These are shipped as a kit that is simple to put together, alternatively these can be shipped fully assembled but the shipping will go up quite a bit from $30 for a 48x48 kit to just over $100 for a large box.

2nd:

Galley strainer bars. These are basically the same as the studio strainer bars except that they are more detailed, by that I mean that all hard edges on the braces are rounded over by a router at 1/4" radius consistently throughout the bars, then sanded with 180 grit to reach a super smooth surface finish.

like the studio strainers, These are glued and nailed together permanently (unless you omit the glue during assembly).

These are shipped as a kit that is simple to put together, alternatively these can be shipped fully assembled but the shipping will go up quite a bit from $30 for a 48x48 kit to just over $100 for a large box.

3rd:

Traditional wood keyed stretchers. These are museum grade stretcher bars that use wood keys in all the joints that can be tapped in. This expands the joint and tightens the canvas if needed later down the road if it get's loose over time. These are also fully detailed with regard to rounding hard edges and sanded to super fine surface with 180 grit.

Like the above These are shipped as a kit that is simple to put together, alternatively these can be shipped fully assembled but the shipping will go up quite a bit from $30 for a 48x48 kit to just over $100 for a large box.

4th:

Mechanical museum grade stretchers. These use an expansion bolt and two brass guide rods in each joint that allows methodical exact expansion to be applied to the canvas or pre-existing painting. These are a favorite of art conservators that work with delicate paintings that need support replacement. These are also the primary choice for professionals that want the best of the best and don't mind paying a premium for fine detail. These are also shipped as a kit or fully assembled.

We also deliver within Sonoma County, Napa County and Marin.

Have a great week! Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions :)

Best,
